If God is good

In Christianity there have been various arguments on prayers one says “it isn’t neccessary”, another says “it is” each side having a reasonable point of why and why not. God is good, just, perfect, caring, loving, compassionate and merciful, this is a Christian believe, then logically it is expected that with all these aforementioned attributes there is no need to pray, since a loving God won’t in His love allows bad thing to happen especially to His people, but experiences proved otherwise and the question follows “WHY?”. The Bible says a lot of things concerning whom God is to us (light, salvation, fortress, rock etc.)

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my
deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take
refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.
Psalms 18:2

The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?...
Psalms 27:1

However, to His Children God has seldom been seen as that. This will bring us to why we should pray despite that God is good.

Some Reasons Why We Should Pray

1. The Scripture showed the Pattern.

For everything that was written in the past was
written to teach us, so that through the endurance
taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement
they provide we might have hope.
Romans 15:4

From Genesis through the new testament, we have seen people praying, some might say “that was the old testament because Jesus hasn’t come”. However, we did see in the new testament that prayer was a major attitude of the apostles, they said

And will give our attention to prayer and the
ministry of the word.
Acts 6:4

Moses kept on praying despite his walk with God and those attributes that God showed him about Himself didn’t make him think he needed not to pray again. At every junction beyond human ability he prayed. Joshua also didn’t relent in prayers, his refusal to pray resulted in an unholy league with the Gibeonites. Communication with God has been defined as prayer, when he prayed the sun stayed till they won the battle, the list can go on, Elijah, David, Nehemiah, Peter, Paul etc. Since the fall man has began to call upon God (Gen. 5:26).

2. It is God’s Will

…how much more will your
Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask him!
Luke 11:13

Apart from the fact that it is a pattern seen in the Scriptures we can see that it is God’s will that we ask (pray) for then can we expect to see God in action. It is His will that we pray, He knew there is a red sea ahead but not until Moses communicated with God did He give Him instruction and part it. Also, Elisha at river Jordan when he prayed God acted on his behalf. David said:

I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
Psalm 18:3

In the NT, we know that whatever Jesus did or say is always the Father’s will.

Jesus told his disciples a parable to
show them that they should always pray
and not give up.
Luke 18:1

We need to know that God’s sovereignty in action when man need to act(pray) is an unusual occurrence, it is more like a chance there is no guarantee, God might do things in His own sovereignty but let us follow His will that we pray.

3. It is a Christian Practice

Being glad in hope, quiet in trouble, at all times given to prayer,
Romans 12:12

It is expected of a Christian that his new position in Christ should be in line with his practice. This calls for action. It is a positional truth that:

The Lord takes care of me as his sheep; I will not be without any good thing.
Psalms 23:1

But his Practice should be that:

Pour out all your worries and stress upon Him and leave them there, for He always tenderly cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7

Let your voice come up to me in the day of trouble; I will be your saviour, so that you may give glory to me.
Psalms 50:15

Be encouraged to pray, God desires ACTIVE children not PASSIVE children. He wants us to rule our situations by calling out to Him in prayers. In life it is popularly said ” a closed mouth is a closed destiny”, however, Christians have a better covenant established on a better promise, given the name of Jesus, with that we don’t have to play chance but with certainty we draw near to God and expect His answers when we ask according to His will.
