Built On The Rock

Built on the rock of the sayings of Christ who is the best ever known teacher. He uses parable to speak to His followers and disciples. Today we shall consider one of His comparisons and what we can learn.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Matthew 7:24-27

Jesud had told his disciples a lot of things concerning their life in this world, the laws and the kingdom of God (Matthew 5-7). He crowned His teachings with something very vital to seeing God’s glory in our lives. Let’s examine the scripture.

Everyone

This gives us the understanding that this instruction or principle works for everyone (that acknowledges the Lordship of Jesus) without any exemption. Whatsoever class you place yourself in the body of Christ, no matter how humbling your situation is. This instruction is for you, did Jesus need to say this again? I think not.

Hears and Does

Hearing and doing are expected of the disciples if they’re going to build their houses on the rock. In contrast, hearing and doing is not something man is willing to do when it is not going to be easy. Let us remind ourselves

For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Matthew 7:14

Jesus issued a shocking instruction to enter through a narrow and hard way, this calls for a deep thought. It is easy to hear the words of Jesus in this era, they’re almost everywhere on the social media, radio and television. Hardly would a day pass without we hearing/reading them.

He didn’t stop at the point of hearing alone. Had He stopped there, then many sermon hearers would have been living fine but not so. Doing His sayings is an integral part of building the house on the rock. These sayings are the eternal words of the Father which Jesus has revealed to us.

It had been long since we have been hearing the instructions of Jesus, are we doing them? Truly He said we should not be anxious of tomorrow but are we following closely? This is a question to us all, what are the instructions of Jesus that we have heard but are not doing?

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves

James 1:22

Built Like A Wise Man

Happy is the servant whom his Lord shall call ”wise”. That is, those who hear and do his sayings are wise and wisdom is seen in doing. But, man is born unto trouble, as a result, we all know they’re inevitable during our stay on earth.

In addition, the wise can control the flood, use windbreaker and also prevent the rain from beating against his house but they were all unavoidable. The same occurrence happened to both the wise and the foolish. What makes the difference? One stands the other falls.

What do we learn from this? Accepting Jesus doesn’t mean challenges, storms or persecution free life, infact we should get ready for more of them.

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Psalms 34:19

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

2Timothy 3:12

This house represent our lives and anything pertaining to it be it our career, call in the body of Christ or our family.

Jesus wants us to know that He has prepared us against the tempest with His sayings. Therefore, if we build on them with that our boat cannot sink nor our house falls.

A life in all its entirety built on the sayings of Jesus can never fail! Whose hope and confidence nothing can dismay.
