Christian Virtues: Waiting

Waiting is one of the virtues needed in our walk with God, for it is what precedes victory in Him. Faith precedes waiting for no man waits for what is not worth waiting for, but as Christians we have a surer hope that whatever nature our waiting might take, it is to a glorious end. The place of waiting cannot be over emphasized, God cannot be rushed or made restless with our burdens, for in waiting we acknowledge that we have no strength of our own.

In Isaiah 41:14
” Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob,
little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help you,” declares the LORD,
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” TNIV

Here, God was talking to Jacob who has no strength that He will help him and knowing fully well that God cannot lie as the scripture has said, what will that Jacob do? It is to wait till when God will show forth. We can always trade our weaknesses for His strength by simply waiting on Him, prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 40:31
” But those who are waiting for the Lord will have new strength; they will get wings
like eagles: running, they will not be tired, and walking, they will have no weariness’ BBE

Just as it is popularly known that nothing worth comes easy, definitely waiting is not easy because sometimes the timing of God might be longer than you planned, but you still have to wait.

In Psalms 130:5-6, there is a great picture of a Christian kind of waiting on God. Firstly, we must put our whole being in it that is, we must have an undivided heart and be focused. Secondly, it should be triggered by the word of God. Thirdly, the waiting was more than that of the watchmen. Fourthly, the watchmen has a sure hope that the morning will come (it is God’s sovereign will) and he can guess exactly when it will come (clock) as Christians can be sure that what he’s waiting on God for will be done for 1st John 5:14-15 says “if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us…………..we know that we have what we asked of him.”

Gives us the assurance but on the contrary, a Christian can’t say exactly when the morning (answer) will come because the time is in God’s hands nevertheless he knows faithful is He that promised. Therefore, we should know that waiting on God has its strength in the word of God because many things will rise to make one quit but the settled word of God will keep one going.

Learning from Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicle 20:1-24) though the battle was fierce against him and was afraid, but his fear did not make Him loose the consciousness of God’s power which made them run to God and He gave them a sure word of prophecy which is they should wait vs17 despite the state they were, the remedy was to wait and see, after their obedience they got the victory.

There is blessing in waiting on God having done all to wait, let us wait therefore considering the cloud of witnesses surrounding us saints like Daniel and his 3 friends they waited on God in prayers, also Elijah he had to pray for 7 times before rain could fall, David among others. Waiting on God gives peace(rest) as well as safety.
